Gemeenschapsinstelling de Zande was founded in 1849 and is now part of the Ministry of Flemish Community. It provides care and education for both boys and girls between the ages of 14 and 18. The 76 boys are accommodated in a semi-closed institution and the 40 girls are held in a closed institution. All the young people are placed by the juvenile courts either because their care at home has broken down or for criminal activity. The programmes are aimed at changing their lifestyle through observation and education.
