Aims
Rentray is a private custodial juvenile institution for male and female juveniles aged between 12 and 23, placed there by the Ministry of Justice because of serious behavioural problems or criminal behaviour. Attached to Rentray is a school for VSO-ZMOK students (youngsters with special needs and/or behavioural problems). Rentray runs secure, semi-secure and open units in the towns of Eefde, Rekken and Lelystad. There are almost 400 places at Rentray with over 625 staff.
Methodology
Rentray is a social organisation that focuses on results. It develops and implements interventions for the benefit of juveniles who have come into contact with the courts, or who are at risk of doing so. The interventions are designed to train, treat and educate the youngsters so that they develop a socially acceptable lifestyle. In this way, Rentray is also making a long-term investment in their future and, as a consequence, in public safety. The integrated programme of treatment and education is continually being adapted in the light of changing social and scientific insights. The institute focuses on five major protective mechanisms: reducing risk impact, reducing negative chain reaction, promoting self-esteem and self-efficacy, opening up opportunities and strengthening the social system. Besides to a variety of therapies and activities, a strong emphasis is laid on supported employment
Population/target group
The juveniles placed at Rentray have serious problems. Rentray admits both male and female juveniles, all with a long history of contact with youth services. They are a threat to their environment, or are them selves at risk. The reasons for this are complex, stemming from innate factors and inadequate parenting. They frequently come from families that offer insufficient structure and security. These youngsters often have an inherent predisposition for problems as well. Added together, these factors may lead to serious emotional and behavioural problems in later life. These problems occur not only at home, but also at school or in the neighbourhood where the juveniles live, where their delinquent behaviour may bring them to the attention of the courts.
Special needs
All juveniles show a wide range of severe problem behaviour at the time of their admission. About 90% could be categorized in DSM IV as Oppositional-Defiant Disorder or Conduct Disorder and 70% with comorbid disorders (Depression Disorder, ADHD, autism spectrum disorder). About 30% are retarded learners.
